The Library of the Latvian Academy of Culture houses periodicals, books, video and audio recordings, comprising 55 000 CDs. The Library, conforming to its aim and mission, safeguards the foundation for studies and scientific work for Academy’s students and lecturers by accumulating and storing unique works in such fields as Philology, History of Religion, History of Culture, Ethics, Psychology, Sociology, Folklore Studies, History, Literature Studies, Theatre Studies, Cinema Studies, Art Studies, as well as fiction published in Latvian. There are many valuable editions in different fields available in English, German, Russian, Polish, Scandinavian, and other languages. The Library offers also a considerable collection of encyclopedias and dictionaries in Latvian, Lithuanian, English, German, Polish, French, Russian, Spanish, and Scandinavian languages.

The Erasmus students of the Latvian Academy of Culture may also subscribe to the National Library of Latvia to get access to its wide collection of materials. To register as an NLL reader, the student will be asked to show a document proving his/ her identity and fill in a request form at 3 Mūkusalas Street, Floor 1.
The collection of the National Library of Latvia comprises 4,5 million units, embracing all branches of science, its basic profile being Social Sciences and the Humanities. The library offers its readers access to the collection of rare books and manuscripts, to Letonica and the Baltic Central Library, as well as to various maps, sound recordings, graphic documents, small prints, and periodicals. Presently, the emphasis of the library activities is laid on supporting higher education, research, and life-long education.
The NLL is a centre of theoretical research and practical analysis of the activities of the Latvian libraries. The NLL carries out the functions of the centre of Latvia Interlibrary Loan, it ensures the library and information service to the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia, and implements the standardisation of the branch. From the outset the main concern of the National Library of Latvia has been the national bibliography.
