The programme aims to promote the growth of the creative industries sector. Through providing interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge and practical skills for students specializing in culture management, it ensures the overall understanding of cultural politics and the basic skills for graduates to become entrepreneurs within the creative industries.


The programme focuses on mastering creative entrepreneurship competencies and the current trends of creative industries. An important part of studies is dedicated to understanding the role of state as well as non-governmental institutions in the field of culture. By providing both theoretical knowledge and practical study activities, the programme enables students to get in-depth understanding of cultural processes in Latvia and abroad. The academic body of the programme is represented by industry professionals as well as skilled academics who engage students in organizing various creative and research projects already during their study process as well as after graduation.


Graduates of this programme will be able to understand the cultural and political context of creative industries, as well as the specifics of managing an enterprise. They will be able to offer innovative ideas in different areas of creative industries, understand the role and place of culture in society, as well as to raise funds and to establish co-operations for developing culture projects and events. They will be skilled in marketing and project management and will be able to act in compliance with existing legislation. Furthermore, the graduates will be confident in conducting research in culture and creative industries and to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

Theoretical fundamentals of arts and humanities

The theoretical courses, such as Modernism, Postmodernism and The Sociology of Culture and Art provide the academic foundation and prepare students for the elaboration of their MA thesis.

Creative industries

A variety of courses is offered to strengthen the cultural management and entrepreneurial skills, e.g. Cultural Management, Cultural Economics, Creative Entrepreneurship, Cultural Project Management, Cultural Marketing, Marketing Research, Branding, The Legal Regulations of Cultural and Creative industries. Furthermore, courses in Museum and Cultural Heritage Management, Theatre Management, Music Industry Management and The Basics of Film Production offer the knowledge necessary for working in the specific fields of creative industries.


Students are introduced to the basics of research as a building fundament for their MA thesis and the argumentation behind it. This includes mastering the differences between the most common research methods used for academic or commercial research and marketing studies.

Work placement

During the whole study process, students must obtain two work placements, one of which takes place in a company or organisation in the field of creative industries and the second is a placement related to project and culture event management. Combining the practical work during work placements with the theoretical skills gained during the lectures, students will be able to get acquainted with the specifics of creative and cultural industries, build their professional network and learn about their own interests and abilities to apply after graduating.

All applicants must submit:

1) A completed application form;

2) A copy of passport or identity card (the original should also be presented);

3) A copy of the BA (undergraduate) diploma together with the academic transcript of records (the original should also be presented)*;

4) Applicant’s Curriculum Vitae (CV);

5) A letter of motivation (2000-3000 characters)

6) Two photos of the applicant (3x4 cm);

7) Printout of the payment order for the applicant’s registration fee of 20.00 EUR

*Before applying for studies at the Latvian Academy of Culture the international applicants are required to undergo the procedure of recognition of their secondary education certificate at the Academic Information Centre (for further information please see: )

Please make sure that your application is received within the application period. Application period 2019 is from July 2 till July 7.

All applicants are evaluated based on their results in*:

  • Test in English (or German or French);
  • Test in the Theory and History of Culture;
  • Admission Interview.


Test in English (or German or French)

The purpose of this admission exam is to test the applicant’s general knowledge in the relevant foreign language, including reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills. The difficulty of the test corresponds to B2 Level of “the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL)" approved by the European Council.

The test is evaluated on a scale from 0-100 points.

Instead of taking the test an applicant can choose to submit an internationally recognized foreign language proficiency certificate of a level B2 or higher. Applicants who have obtained their Bachelor's degree at the Latvian Academy of Culture do not have to take the test as the final grade in their first foreign language (English, German or French) will be assessed as their admission exam.

Test in the Theory and History of Culture

The purpose of this admission exam is to test the applicants' general knowledge in the theory and history of culture, as well as the topicalities of culture in Latvia and abroad. It includes questions on the following topics:

  • Topical cultural processes in Latvia and abroad;
  • The theory of culture and cultural sciences;
  • Philosophy and the history of philosophy;
  • Religion and the history of religion;
  • The history of fine arts and architecture;
  • The history of literature;
  • The history of music;
  • The history of theatre art and cinema.

In order to successfully pass the test, the applicant must present factual knowledge on the topics mentioned above, as well as the ability to detect the correct answer with the help of deduction.

The test consists of 100 closed questions with multiple-choice options and is evaluated on a scale from 0-100 points. The duration of the test is 2 hours 30 minutes.

Applicants who have obtained their Bachelor's degree at the Latvian Academy of Culture do not have to take the test, as the average grade of their BA diploma will be assessed as their admission exam.

Admission Interview

The purpose of the interview is to learn the motivation of the applicant in choosing the programme and to determine whether the applicant would be able to study and work in the chosen field. The interview is not a test of knowledge, but rather a conversation tailored individually to create a comprehensive understanding of the personality of each applicant.

The questions of the interview are created based on three thematic sections:

  • The motivation and the ability of the applicant to study in the chosen programme;
  • The topical issues in culture and creative industries in Latvia (the admission commission also gives a management task, to which the applicant must provide a brief solution, whilst showing the ability to understand the specifics of the field of culture in Latvia);
  • The intended Master’s thesis, including the applicant's interest and efforts in the area of the intended topic, as well as the likelihood of carrying out such research in the given timeframe.

The admission interview is evaluated on a scale from 0-100 points.
