Walpurgis Night is a cultural and musical event organised by the Student Council of the Latvian Academy of Culture and it is the Academy’s most brilliant event of the year.

The celebrations of Walpurgis Night stem from the distant 8th century AD. Originally, the Walpurgis Night was a get-together time for the witches awaiting the arrival of spring. Later, in the Middle Ages, the Walpurgis Night was banned, causing extreme terror to all witches and wizards, for this night was the night when they were burnt at the stake.

The Student Council of the LAC, looking, as usually, from its alternative point of view, has joined the Walpurgis Night’s original and medieval messages together – on this night, April 30, the magical rituals occur as everyone awaits the arrival of spring and as the most wicked, ill-mannered and abhorrent witch gets burned at the stake at midnight. Good, alternative-style music on the chill stage, films, lectures, performances, and activities in the Academy’s rooms and in its garden; friends, acquaintances, and young, open, friendly people; crazy party up till sunrise – all this makes the first biggest event of the spring so special and magical, taking place in the very heart of the Moscow Suburb of Riga, at Ludzas Street 24.
