Event Info

Have you ever wondered about the Netherlands and Belgium? Want to learn something new about the countries of waffles and windmills, chocolates and cheese? Curious what Dutch sounds like? Or maybe you’ve heard of people like Michael R. Roskam, Felix van Groeningen, Michael Dudok de Wit or Alex van Warmerdam?

The Riga CinemaBioscoop Film Festival is made for you! It will take place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of October 2017 in Kino Bize, bringing you - for the first time ever!- the best of Dutch-language films from Belgium and the Netherlands, with Latvian and English subtitles!

We are opening the film festival on Friday the 20th of October with a Belgian night. At 8pm, Kino Bize will screen the short documentary „Birdwatching 4x4” by Dieter Deswarte and Benjamin Vandewalle, a choreography made by and for the children of Molenbeek after the Brussels terror attacks. It will be followed immediately by Academy Award nominee Felix van Groeningen’s award-winning „De Helaasheid der Dingen”, based on the best-selling novel by acclaimed Flemish author Dimitri Verhulst. Buy one ticket but get two films! P.S.: There might be a reception afterwards, but shhh, you didn’t hear it from us!

On Saturday the 21st at 6pm, we will present a series of Dutch and Flemish short films, subtitled into Latvian by the students of the Latvian Academy of Culture.  It includes the animated short “Bingo!”, created by Patrick Schoenmaker, Jeroen Houben’s films “Home Suite Home” and “Gips”“Inconvenient Comfort” by Adam Fillenz, “Opgeruimd” by Shariff Nasr, and “These Dirty Words” by Jens Rijsdijk.

On Saturday at night at 8pm is when Kino Bize will have its Dutch night with once again two films for the price of one: “Bars” by René van Zundert, a short documentary about the dreams of Michael and his struggles with poverty in the Netherlands, and If the sun explodes” by Hanna van Niekerk, the bittersweet tale of two Dutch lovers travelling through Lithuania as their relationship is put to the test.

On Sunday the 22nd at 8pm, finally, we have a special LGBTQ+ programme which opens with two touching documentaries about gender bending and the non-binary: “Ma’maQueen” by Esmée van Loon, and “Isis” by Shafelly Snijder. These films will be followed by a lively discussion with the Latvian LGBT group MOZAIKA. After the discussion and a short break, the programme will continue with two short and sweet comedies about two very different same-sex couples: “Menuet”, a film created by Laura Van Haecke, Anouk Fortunier, Evelyn Simons and Maël Robijns and which won the 7 Dagen Kort competition in Brussels in 2015, and “Tongen” by Dominique Gimberg, a film about the trials and tribulations of discovering love, lust and sexuality. It will be the perfect end to a wonderful festival!

Do not miss your opportunity to see films from two countries with a great generation of cinematographers! You have been warned: Belgium and the Netherlands may be small countries, but the talent is big!

The films on Friday and Saturday at 6pm will be subtitled in Latvian. The films on Saturday at 8pm and on Sunday will be subtitled in English. For more information, visit wwww.kinobize.lv.
