Her Excellency Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland Eimear Friel visits the Latvian Academy of Culture
On November 16, 2023 the students and teachers of the specialization “Cross Cultural Studies: Latvia - English speaking countries” of the Cross Cultural Relations and Foreign Languages Department were honoured to welcome at the Latvian Academy of Culture Her Excellency Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland Eimear Friel.
The Ambassador delivered a talk on what makes her proud of Ireland stressing three aspects - Ireland in the world, Ireland and diversity and Ireland and culture. Ireland, similarly to Latvia, has experienced a long history of conflict and hardship, yet despite the rough historical background, since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, Ireland has continuously been part of United Nations Peacekeeping in the world and has successfully implemented society integration policy and moved towards becoming an inclusive and tolerant community. Ireland successfully keeps up its fascinating culture traditions: prolific Irish literature, strong theatrical and musical traditions, passionate traditional dancing and Celtic festivals.
The Ambassador answered numerous questions from the students of the “Cross-Cultural Studies: Latvia – English-Speaking Countries” group about the Irish language, unique dance steps and the current political situation.
