Students of the Latvian Academy of Culture take part in the International Festival “Keine Disziplin” in Zurich
Three students of the Latvian Academy of Culture: Ieva Džindža (graduate programme in ‘Theatre Arts’), Henrijs Arājs (undergraduate programme in ‘Theatre and Stage Directing’) and Līga Ūbele (undergraduate programme in ‘Contemporary Dance’) took part in an international project HALL 06 in Zurich, Switzerland together with students from the Art Academy of Latvia and the Köln International School of Design (KISD).
The project is part of a comprehensive interdisciplinary initiative HALL33, which looks at and examines buildings as a part of performance and performances as a building. Students from various European universities are designing and building spatial installations, which would include performative experience. The project is carried out by a team of architects ‘Theatre as Architecture Architecture as Theatre (TAAT)’. The team includes curators and architects Breg Horemans and Gert Jan Stem, playwright Sodja Lotker and parfumeur Andreas Wilhelm.
The space creates dramaturgy in which strangers - actors, choreographers, dancers and spectators - come together and simultaneously create a unique experience for themselves.
Līga Ūbele points out: “In HALL 06 special attention was given to scent as a means of artistic expression. The work tempo was incredible. In a matter of days we moved from sketches to marking the approximate outline of the space and then the construction of the first walls. Every day brought new ideas, impressions, and a lot of work.”
The first stage of the project - masterclass with architects Gert Jan Stem and Breg Horemans - took place in November, 2017 at the Theatre house of the Latvian Academy of Culture “Zirgu pasts”. The masterclass examined the potential for interaction between theater and architecture. The final stage of the project is the performative installation HALL33, which was premiered at the festival “Keine Disziplin” in Zurich.
