28.10.2025

The newest special issue (Vol. 28) of the scholarly journal “Culture Crossroads” of the Latvian Academy of Culture is dedicated to the materials from the international symposium “Naming / Norming: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)”.

This volume includes several articles by international authors covering diverse areas of intangible cultural heritage, research approaches, and case studies from different countries. The articles analyze both theoretical and practical aspects—such as heritage classification, diversity, contemporary development trends, the role of communities and researchers, interdisciplinary collaboration, and examples from France, Brazil, China, Germany, and beyond.

The issue also features contributions from experts who have participated directly in the development and implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It compiles both academic reflections on the UNESCO Convention and current debates on intangible heritage regulation in various countries, providing a broad international perspective on heritage research and practice in today’s society. The special issue includes both historical and contemporary viewpoints that offer deeper insight into the mechanisms of regulating and practicing intangible cultural heritage today.
