LV-UA NEW MEDIA

01.07.2025. – 31.12.2026.

The project is conducted through Latvian-Ukrainian Joint Program of Scientific and Technological Cooperation.

39 998 EUR

War Through the Lens of New Media (…) involves a qualitative study of the latest methods and forms of documenting the events of Russia's war against Ukraine as demonstrated by contemporary media practices.

The goal of the project is to analyze and research technologies and formats of new media that cover the events of Russia's full-scale aggression, with the aim of effectively integrating these insights into educational programs to enhance media literacy and critical thinking, and to improve the training of specialists who use new media for documenting and analyzing war events

Project tasks:

  1. Collecting and systematizing audiovisual materials available in open sources (social media, mobile apps, video hosting platforms, media platforms) that document the events of Russian aggression (documentary films, media works, amateur videos).
  2. Ensuring access to the collected materials, creating open or partially open platforms for accessing the archives, particularly for researchers, journalists, and the general public; promoting the project through social media to widely disseminate materials documenting the war in Ukraine.
  3. Studying changes in the style, techniques, and themes of audiovisual documents during the period of Russia's full-scale invasion, identifying key trends, including the impact of the war on society through new media, determining different media formats for comprehensive documentation of military conflicts, and researching new technologies, such as drones, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, in the context of documenting the war, with the subsequent publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Developing educational programs and materials, creating training courses, seminars, practical training sessions, and workshops based on them for teaching students, researchers, and the public methods of documenting the war using new media.
  5. Collaborating with international organizations and media, establishing cooperation between Ukrainian and Latvian partner, other organizations, and media companies to spread information about the events of the war in Ukraine, and working with other research projects and databases to ensure a comprehensive approach to studying the events of the Russia-Ukraine war
