05.10.2015

Riga, Latvian Academy of Culture, November 12 – 14, 2015

The aim of the Latvian Academy of Culture Research Centre is to promote development in the Humanities and the Social Sciences as well as to realise research projects on issues related to the fields of culture and the arts of international topicality and significance for Latvia. Pursuant to this mission, the Research Centre organises the annual international scientific conference “Cultural Crosspoints”. In 2015, the conference “Cultural Crosspoints” will be held for the ninth time.

Traditionally, the papers presented at the conference “Cultural Crosspoints” cover various topics and issues related to the fields of culture and the arts.

The central themes of the 2015 “Cultural Crosspoints” conference are: diversity, manifestations, research, and documentation methods of cultural traditions in a modern changing environment. In order to gain an in-depth view of the unique tradition inheritance mechanisms, a separate thematic session will be dedicated to the Livs community: on November 14, 2015 there will be a Liv’s Day at Zirgu Pasts – the Latvian Academy of Culture Theatre House, during which the research insights will be presented, a discussion will take place, and the participants will have an opportunity to take part in various creative workshops. Moreover, the interconnection between the Latvian cultural traditions and the Latvian national identity will be investigated, with a particular focus on the role of the Song and Dance Festival in the cultural environment of Latvia and the Baltic states. Opportunities for documentation of traditions and rituals in the environment of new technologies and social networks; boundary between the innovative transformation of traditions and its ideological degradation; traditions as an element of historic and social memory; the means of inheritance of traditions – these and other themes will be subject to an open discussion within the framework of the conference.

We invite everybody interested in Latvian cultural and artistic life and research to share their research results, opinions, and suggestions!
