Biography

 

Doctor of Philosophy Ivars Bērziņš has been a lecturer at the Academy since 1997. He has designed a Master’s program in Cultural Management and has managed a Master’s sub-program in International Media and Cultural Management.

He studied choir conducting at the Latvian Academy of Music and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and earned an academic degree in cultural management from the Hamburg University of Music and Theater. He holds a PhD from the University of Münster for his dissertation “Privatization in the Field of Culture”.  Being the chief conductor of the 20th and 21st General Latvian Song Festivals, conductor of the Latvian Radio Choir, he has founded and conducted a professional chamber choir “Sindi Putnu Dārzs”. He gave concerts in many European countries, won international competitions, won Grand Prix in Spain, Finland and Latvia. He worked as the intendant of the Latvian National Opera, a project coordinator of the Goethe Institute in Latvia, a member of the Councils of the Soros Foundation in Latvia and the Latvian Culture Foundation, the director of the Latvian-German Culture, Education and Information Foundation.  Publishes articles in Latvian and foreign academic journals, participates in scientific conferences, delivers guest lectures at Latvian, Polish and German universities. He is the founder of the Latvian New Theater Institute and a member of the board of the Riga Richard Wagner Theater Renovation Foundation.

He has been awarded a commemorative badge of 1991 barricades’ participant and a letter of commendation from the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. In 2021 he has been awarded the Cross of Recognition and appointed as Commander of the Cross of Recognition.
