Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival in Collaboration with the Latvian Academy of Culture
When broadening this year’s programme, Valmiera Summer Theatre festival for the first time in its history will be collaborating with the Latvian Academy of Culture (LAC) to create the Baltic “Student shed” – a platform for the emerging professisonal theatre performers from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The festival will take place from August 7 to 9 in Valmiera, and its extended programm is set to strenghen this year’s theme “TILTI” (“BRIDGES”), establishing connections between different countries, generations and theatre languages.
Baltic Student shed performances:
“Makbetiņš”, Latvian Academy of Culture. What happens, when life feels meaningless, but one keeps fighting his fears, wishes, and obsessions? Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the performance riddled with dark humour and irony explores guilt, violence, and existential questions. Recommended audience: adults (14+). Performance in Latvian.
“Riests. Dobjš rējiens. Nāve”, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Physically and emotionally intense movement performance about the longing for closeness, animalistic human nature, and the boundary between tenderness and destruction. A poetic, provocative and unpredictable experience. Recommended audience: adults (16+). Performance without language.
“Kurš sapņos pirmais?”, University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. A play about dreaming, the creative process, and the boundary between imagination and reality. A story about people who are united by a wish to fulfill their dreams and to not lose their ability to imagine a different world. Recommended audience: adults and youth (14+). Performance in English.
The programme is also supplemented with an international play “Caurums” that has been directed by LAC professor and stage director Elmārs Seņkovs together with LAC lecturer and scenographer Reinis Suhanovs in collaboration with actors of the National Theatre of Faroe Islands. The poetic and playful performance tells a story about five travellers that have ended up in an unknown place where the only uniting element is a hole – a frightening and at the same time intriguing symbol for the human creative path, searchings, and meeting opportunities.
